Introducing... Abhijit Kale Linden Park's 2008 Overseas Player

He's Probably the most famous cricketer you've never heard of and he's coming to a ground near you soon.

Linden Park, who currently play their trade in Division Three of the Kent Cricket League, have announced a major coup in securing the signature of Indian international Abhijit Kale as player/coach for the new season. But despite having made one appearance for the national side and a sparkling century for India A against England in 2001, it is for events off the pitch that made him a household name in his home country.

Back in 2003, Kale was banned for three years for offering bribes to selectors Kiran More and Pranab Roy to further his own international career, an allegation he still vehemently denies. Despite protestations over his innocence, the now 34-year-old was eventually allowed to return in January 2004 and is now looking forward to displaying his skills in Kent.

"I expect him to do very well," said his agent Steven Hirst. "Abhijit has an amazing record in the past and it's just a matter of rediscovering his form. He still has a few years left playing at the top level so I'm sure he will do a good job."

Due to arrive on April 4, 2008, for a five month spell at Linden Park, Kale will also be offering coaching throughout the summer as the club rebuilds its pavilion that was burnt down by arsonists in 2006. Director of cricket John Harvey is extremely hopeful that the arrival of such a big name will be the start of a new era for everybody involved.

"Next season is probably the most important ever for our club," he said. "It will be great for some of the kids to be coached by someone with international experience."

Cricket Club Update

To all members of LPCC

The new season is nearly upon us and there are several reasons for us to look forward to it:

1. We will have the use of a fantastic new pavilion for both cricketing and social events - something to really look forward to after two years in portakabins. The pavilion is on schedule to be completed by the end of April in time to host League cricket from May. The facilities in this building will be much improved on its predecessor with showers in each changing room, separate facilities for umpires and ladies, a larger bar area and a large upstairs room for functions etc. Please see the enclosed recent pictures of the progress.

2. Winter nets have been going well and we have recruited a number of new players which should strengthen all teams and enable a push for promotion. Among the new recruits is Abhijit Kale who joins as our overseas player. He has played first class cricket in India for several years and has a batting average of 50+, once scoring an unbeaten century against an England A XI including Andrew Flintoff and James Anderson. I expect watching him bat to be a pleasure on its own this season. He will also be providing coaching on Fridays for the juniors.

3. With a new clubhouse (which in itself will attract more members - both playing and non-playing) and an influx of quality players, we should be confident of having an improved season this year. The club circumstances over the last 2 years have been demanding for the committee, captains and all of the membership , but the club continues to thrive. And with the resurrection of our facilities , we should look forward to a continually improving future for Linden Park.

The positives above are great but it is important to bear in mind that we still have some hurdles to overcome not least of which is ensuring financial security for the club. We are currently waiting for a ruling from the VAT office which will have an important bearing on the club going forward. If it goes in our favour we will not be far away from the secure position we need but if it is goes adversely we still face an uphill battle to reach that point. I hope that you will all continue to provide the club with the fantastic support that we have seen over the last two years to help us get there. The Fundraising Committee will be detailing a number of events for the coming season which I think will be enjoyed by all.

I will update you when we have a clear picture of the financial status but I wish you a Happy New Season in the meantime.
